Mississippi Penitentiary Release Paths
A person leaving Mississippi State Penitentiary may enter the community, but a gate departure can also be an intradepartmental move. MDOC may transfer an offender from Parchman to another state prison after reception, classification, medical review, or a later assignment decision. Community outcomes include parole, earned-release supervision, or discharge at sentence completion. Parole and earned-release supervision still carry state control outside the prison. A final discharge is different because it generally reflects the end of the sentence obligation described in the issuing record.
The offender's location, unit, location-change date, sentence data, and release fields must be read together. A new institutional location means custody continued elsewhere. A supervision-related result calls for confirmation through Community Corrections. An actual discharge certificate or MDOC Records response is stronger than an earlier projection. The physical location of Parchman in Sunflower County does not convert an MDOC event into a county-jail release.

Search Mississippi Penitentiary Releases
Start with the MDOC offender search. It accepts first name, last name, or an MDOC ID number. The ID is the most precise key. For a name search, compare date of birth, physical descriptors, county of conviction, entry date, location, unit, sentence count, offense information, and sentence date. The public detail uses the label “Tentative Release Date.” That field is a calculation and may change. It is not an actual-release stamp.
Use a short, evidence-based sequence:
- Search by MDOC ID, or use the full name when the number is unknown.
- Match identity through birth, sentence, and conviction-county details.
- Read the current location and location-change date before the tentative date.
- Check the MDOC Parolee Search if active parole may follow confinement.
- Ask MDOC Records for actual discharge or time-computation material when the public result is unclear.
A Tentative Release Date is prospective. It does not establish that a Mississippi State Penitentiary release occurred or identify the person's destination.
Mississippi Penitentiary Record Fields
The MDOC public detail provides a state-sentence summary. It can show an offender photograph, MDOC number, physical description, birth date, entry date, current location, unit, location-change date, number of sentences, total sentence length, offenses, terms, counties of conviction, sentence dates, and Tentative Release Date. A blank or passed date should not be interpreted on its own. Life sentences, death sentences, recalculations, or records without a displayed projection can produce different presentations.
MDOC computes parole, earned-release supervision, tentative release or discharge, and maximum release dates as separate points. The time sheet may incorporate eligible pretrial jail credit, concurrent or consecutive terms, earned credits, forfeitures, court amendments, new sentences, and detainers. A discipline decision or corrected credit can move the public projection. When two sources conflict, request the releasable time-computation record and completed discharge material.

MDOC says public-record requests must be written and are not accepted by telephone. Its General Public records page links to the agency request portal. Include the full name, MDOC number, date of birth, conviction county, approximate release period, and exact requested document. Ask whether the sought date is tentative, parole eligible, ERS eligible, maximum, or an actual completed release or discharge date.
Parchman Release History and Reception
Mississippi State Penitentiary is Mississippi's oldest prison. It opened in 1901 and occupies about 18,000 acres in northern Sunflower County. MDOC reports 3,560 beds, 58 support buildings, and seven residential units. Those figures describe a large state institution, not a local county jail. The scale also helps explain why a location change within the complex or to another MDOC unit may be operational rather than a release event.
Parchman's reception role is more important to release research than its age. MDOC states that male inmates sentenced in northern Mississippi circuit courts first arrive from county jails for orientation and initial classification. They may stay at Parchman or move to another state institution. Thus, arrival from Sunflower County Jail is entry into MDOC custody, and departure for another prison is continued custody. Only an MDOC community-release or discharge record supports a different conclusion.

Mississippi Penitentiary Discharge Process
MDOC's published guidance says the case manager notifies the incarcerated person of the release date and verifies travel plans. If bus travel is requested, MDOC purchases a ticket to the destination or nearest city, but not for out-of-state travel. The agency says release processing can take 30 to 45 days and requires a discharge certificate. These are state-prison procedures. They do not apply to a bond release from Sunflower County Jail.
Travel planning is part of the operational process, but a promised ticket or expected date does not prove completion. Check the updated offender location after the anticipated event. If parole or another supervised placement follows, verify the correct field office based on the approved residence. The Sunflower Probation & Parole Office may be the routing point for someone placed in the county, yet a Parchman releasee can report elsewhere.
Note: An approved residence may place supervision outside Sunflower County, so prison location and reporting-office location need not match.
Mississippi Penitentiary Parole Records
The Mississippi State Parole Board decides whether an eligible state prisoner receives parole. MDOC Community Corrections performs field supervision. This division of authority matters when a person is no longer confined but the sentence remains active. The MDOC Parolee Search can support an active-parole finding, though a negative county filter does not prove supervision ended. Search statewide because the reporting office follows the approved placement.

Parchman and Sunflower Jail Records
Mississippi State Penitentiary and Sunflower County Jail stand in the same county but operate under different systems. The county jail tracks arrests, bookings, holds, bonds, and physical county release. Parchman holds state-sentenced people under MDOC. A person can pass from the jail to Parchman without ever entering the community. Conversely, a person convicted in another Mississippi county can serve time at Parchman without having any Sunflower County booking.
Use the Sunflower County Jail release route for sheriff bookings and the MDOC route for Parchman. Court orders explain legal authority, but each custodial agency must confirm execution. No BOP or dedicated ICE detention facility was verified in the county. A federal or immigration transfer must be traced through its named receiving system, not inferred from the MSP or sheriff roster.
Mississippi SAVIN and VINELink can supply a near-event notice for MDOC custody, transfer, temporary movement, release, return to custody, escape, or abscond supervision. The alert is a prompt to verify, not a permanent discharge archive. Several file changes close together can trigger several notices, and a transfer notice confirms continued custody. When a release alert arrives, compare it with the updated MDOC location and ask Records or Community Corrections which release type took effect. A completed discharge certificate, confirmed parole placement, or ERS record answers more than the alert alone. If the person does not appear, check name spelling and MDOC ID before contacting the Office of Mississippi SAVIN or MDOC.
